YDU Kids Try Architecture and Building Skills at Snapology Party

Youth Development United’s latest Career Discovery event was a Snapology party, where they were taught about architecture and construction while designing and building miniature versions of their own dream homes.

Matt Ralph runs local Snapology events to introduce STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) concepts and encourage hands-on learning. Today he directed the participants to use graph paper, pencils and rulers in the design process, then construct their plans using Legos.

After the event, Matt said,” I was really impressed with how focused everyone was on completing the assignment and the creativity they displayed in bringing their plans to life.”

Emmett designed and built two houses next to each other with a playground between them, imagining that he could share the space with a friendly neighbor. Zoe constructed a high-sided pool in her backyard, cleverly jumbling blue bricks inside to make it look like waves and bubbles. Azaria’s house had an extra large refrigerator, a Christmas tree with presents underneath, and a “calm room” with palm trees and a sitting place to relax on. Marcus designed and built a houseboat with a basketball court on the upper deck.

As some of the kids faced challenges bringing their drawings to life, Matt explained, “Even in the real world, sometimes architects’ plans don’t work when the builders try to make them, and then they work together with engineers to help solve the problems.“

After making a good deal of progress on their creations, the children were invited to individually address the group and give a quick “tour” of their dream home before washing their hands and diving into a lunch of pizza and fresh fruit. Families were encouraged to take home quantities of apples, oranges and bananas as well as donated lightly used Lego sets.

Ariana Lee, whose family attends many YDU events, shared, “I feel very lucky to have access to these great offerings!”
