YDU Coordinates Volunteers for CUSA Food Pantry and Other Local Needs

It is sad but true that many children struggle to meet their nutritional needs on weekends and at other times when school breakfast and lunches are not available to them.

Among its many efforts to address food insecurity in Chester, Youth Development United is now partnering with The Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., who support 80 children in extreme need with non-perishable meals to take home on weekends.

YDU is sending volunteers to the sorority’s pop-up food pantry at the Chester School of the Arts,501 W 9th St, Chester on Thursday, February 8th from 2-4pm and again every other Friday from 2-4pm starting February 23rd. Volunteers can attend just one session or as many as they can make. It is required to have clearances to be in the school. Please contact jeannine@chesteruplandyouthsoccer.org to learn more.

Additionally, YDU is applying funds from its most recent DCIGRA grant to help provide shelf-stable grocery donations (oatmeal packets, tuna, noodles, snacks) that can be included in the packs. Others interested in donating groceries can bring them to CUSA at the designated pantry times or make a delivery during any school hours to Nichola Thompson at Edgmont Scholars Academy, 1450 Edgmont Ave, Chester.

Youth Development United is also helping to spread the word about additional volunteer opportunities that support the community:

Leveling the Playing Field:

Volunteers will inventory and sort sports equipment donations from our intake bins. Volunteers will also help staff maintain the organization of the warehouse space by sorting through current inventory and making sure all equipment is in good condition.

A basic understanding of sports equipment is preferred but not required. Typical volunteer shifts last two hours. This opportunity is open to individuals and groups. The age minimum to volunteer is 10 years old. All volunteers under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
