"Celebrate Trails Day" Attracts Crowd to Eyre Park
Youth Development United proudly hosted Chester’s venue for “Celebrate Trails Day,” a national event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every April, inviting people outside to experience firsthand the joy and impact of the nation’s trails and connected trail networks.
Over 70 people attended, enjoying the variety of free activities and food as well as a bike raffle and other giveaways.
Including the 14 bikes given away at this event, YDU has restored and redistributed 370 donated bicycles at events in Eyre Park and other Chester area locations since 2022. This long-term initiative to increase cycling in Chester was made possible with help from The Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Circuit Trails Coalition.
Another highlight of the day was the reveal of a new Dero Fixit bike maintenance station, purchased with the generous support of the Associates Board of The Foundation for Delaware County, the Riverfront Alliance of Delaware County, members of Bike Delco, and other generous individuals. The station was installed by Chester’s own Barron Lacy, Executive Director of Chester’s 9th Street Youth and Community Center.
The crowd listened attentively as Mayor Stefan Roots unveiled the station, Chester native bike mechanic Mike Minor explained the station’s various uses, and James Bergman of Bike Delco provided information on the Highland Avenue trail groundbreaking taking place in June.
Other participating organizations and individuals also helped to make the day special for the community:
ReWorld Waste donated bikes, helmets and locks, and provided free lunch for all participants, catered by Duo Taco and lovingly served by Ms. Yolanda Jackson.
RaMona Jones of ReWorld gave out sidewalk chalk, stickers and other treats for the children.
Swarthmore Co-Op and Four Seasons Produce donated bulk quantities of fresh fruit for everyone to enjoy and take home.
Leveling the Playing Field donated sports equipment distributed to attendees by local volunteer Mary Deppen; the children especially enjoyed playing basketball with their mayor!
Widener University’s Chris Hallahan hosted fun STEM activities and engineering challenges.
Chelsey Szuttor, a Doctorate student in Widener University’s Occupational Therapy Program, inspired attendees to share their favorite outdoor memories in a writing/art project.
Kiera Bergin and Colton Anckaitis, students from Strath Haven High School created a fun chalk “obstacle course” that inspired movement and exploration.
Youth Development United plans to host another free event in Eyre Park on May 31 for the community, and encourages everyone to enjoy the parks and trails even when there isn’t a planned event.
